Georgia, renowned for its pleasant winters and tropical summers, has been a favored destination for tourists for many years. It’s not just the vibrant music life in Atlanta or Savannah’s historical architecture that captures attention but also many small towns, beautified by glistening lakes, majestic mountains, and delightful town centers. The diverse activities, delicious food, and wine, welcoming residents, and plenty more in these lesser-known towns promise a fascinating experience for any visitor. Here are a few of those must-visit towns.

Dahlonega

Dahlonega, nestled at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is approximately an hour and a half’s drive north of Atlanta. It’s historically significant as the location of the first Gold Rush in the US in 1829. The town honors this legacy with its annual Gold Rush Days Festival and the Dahlonega Gold Museum, which houses unique artifacts and films. Outdoor enthusiasts can visit the local Outback Guide Service for information on nearby trails, waterfalls, and historical sites. For a fun day with the family, Dahlonega Butterfly Farm and the Red Oak Lavender Farm are must-visit places.

However, Dahlonega’s attractions don’t stop there. The charming downtown area boasts places like The Spice & Tea Exchange of Dahlonega and the Dress Up Boutique, which offer exquisite tea and seasonings and comfy fashion options, respectively. For a romantic outing or a weekend getaway with friends, consider the Mountain Laurel Creek Inn & Spa or the Hall House Hotel. With its blend of rustic elegance and sophisticated charm, it’s no surprise Dahlonega is the setting for many events including the Dahlonega Literary & Science Festival and the location for films like Hallmark’s “Christmas in the Smokies”.

Darien

Darien, a serene town on Georgia’s Atlantic Coast, has fewer than 2,000 residents. It is ideally located, around an hour’s drive from both Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. Being a coastal town, it’s perfect for activities including fishing, boating, and kayaking. History enthusiasts should visit Fort King George, the oldest remaining English fort on the Georgia Coast. The Old Jail Art Center and Museum, an old public building refurbished into six functional art galleries, is another crowd-pleaser.

Seafood lovers can savor dishes like the Fried Georgia Shrimp at Skipper’s Fish Camp or the Snow Crab Dinner at B & J’s Steaks and Seafood. For an overnight stay, consider the Oaks on the River Boutique Hotel or the Darien Waterfront Inn. With quick access from Darien to plantations, barrier islands, and parks, a day trip can easily transition into a week-long journey.

Thomasville

Thomasville, close to the Florida border and less than an hour’s drive from Tallahassee, promises a delightful Victorian charm. The Rose Garden and Cherokee Lake Park are both home to over 1,500 rose bushes that bloom each summer and are the perfect setting for the Annual Rose Show and Festival each April.

Gourmets will enjoy local dishes like Gulf Shrimp and Filet Mignon at the Chop House on the Bricks, or a latte and fresh muffin at the Grassroots Coffee Shop. Ensure not to miss the quality yarn at Fuzzy Goat Yarns or the materials at Trolly’s Designer Fabrics. To navigate your way around town, you can engage the services of Local Strolls Historic Tours for a guided tour.

Peachtree City

Picturesque Peachtree City, less than forty minutes from Atlanta, has been the filming location for Sweet Home Alabama and Drop Dead Diva. The city has over 100 miles of golf cart paths, offering unique travel flexibility. The Southern Hollywood Film Tour, a popular visitors’ choice, maps out locale areas used to shoot well-loved movies.

Several comfortable accommodation options are available, from the familiar Hilton Garden Inn Atlanta Peachtree City and Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites to local seafood dining at the Georgia Shrimp Company or Due South Seafood Kitchen. Shopping enthusiasts will enjoy establishments such as Darling Diva’s Boutique and Lizard Thicket.

Madison

Madison, Georgia, boasts storybook homes, lush greenery, and delightful shopping facilities. Check out destinations like the Morgan County Historical Society and Heritage Hall for historical museums, or grab a bite to eat at Benny Paul’s Soul Food, renowned for its baby back ribs, fried chicken, and cornbread.

Madison is approximately an hour’s drive from Atlanta and Augusta, making it a perfect small-town stop if you’re visiting the larger metropolitan areas in the state. For an extended trip, consider a stay at the Farmhouse Inn or the James Madison Inn.

St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s, a gorgeous coastal community located only an hour’s drive north of Jacksonville, Florida, is known as the entry point to Georgia’s famous Cumberland Island. There are ample activities to explore, from visiting the St. Mary’s Submarine Museum, the singular museum of its kind in Southern Georgia, to trips to Cumberland Island, offering opportunities for fishing, hiking, and spotting wildlife.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the nature-rich Crooked River State Park, while those who prefer a more relaxed experience can opt for the quaint Spencer House Inn. If you’re looking for delicious dining, try the offerings at Locals Dockside, or take the St. Mary’s Murder, Mayem, and Mimosas Walking Tour for a cocktail-infused visit to various places of intrigue.

Greensboro

Lake lovers will enjoy Greensboro, a town built around the shimmering waters of Lake Oconee, a spot perfect for swimming, tubing, and paddleboarding. For fine dining with a stunning view, do visit Gaby’s by the Lake.

Greensboro features the luxury Ritz-Carlton Lake Oconee, which offers luxury rooms, outdoor fireplaces, and private cottages, allowing you to relax on the property or explore the town’s downtown. Highlights of the town include Oconee Brewing Company for craft beers and live music, and the local shopping establishments Just Be and Pop Vintage.

If your idea of a perfect trip involves picturesque views, delicious cuisine, unique shopping experiences, and charming small towns, then Georgia is a place to visit. With a combination of quaint inns, elegant resorts, and comfortable hotels, these towns cater to different preferences, ensuring a memorable experience that will make you not want to leave.
