USDA Announces Liquid Egg Product Recall due to Mislabelling

Thousands of pounds of liquid egg products are being recalled by a food manufacturer due to an issue surrounding “misbranding”, as reported by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The announcement was made by Michael Foods Inc, a subsidiary of Post Holdings.

Details of the Recalled Products

According to the USDA press release dated June 30, a total of 4,620 pounds of liquid egg products are included in the recall. The specific product involves 32-ounce cartons of Fair Meadow Foundations whole eggs with citric acid, which bear a lot code of 4162G, and with an expiry date of September 16, 2024.

Reason for Product Recall

Milk, a known allergen, is found in the said product, which has consequently led to its removal from store shelves. The USDA stated that the product’s label did not indicate the presence of milk.

Impact of the Recall

The products in question were distributed across multiple states including Alabama, Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, and Utah, primarily for restaurant and institutional use. The USDA added that these items were located during a routine inventory inspection.

Unintentional Mislabelling

The food manufacturers discovered an imbalance in their inventory – while there was a shortage of Whole Egg with Citric Acid cartons, they found an excess of Breakfast Blend Scrambled Egg cartons. The erroneous labeling was traced back to a single, short production run of the Breakfast Blend Scrambled Egg. This formulation, which contains milk, was mistakenly labelled as the Whole Egg with Citric Acid, which does not declare the presence of milk, a known allergen.

Current Recall Status

As per the report, no illnesses have been reported linked to the mislabelled product. However, in the light of potential allergic reactions, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has expressed concern that some of the unaccounted liquid egg products may still be in restaurant or institutional refrigerators.

Urgent Action Required

The press release urged that these products should not be served and should either be discarded or returned to the point of purchase. Post Holdings has been contacted by FOX Business for a comment on the matter, with a response yet to be received.
