While a guilty verdict may energize Democrats into believing their claim—that Trump is untrustworthy—is validated, they risk alienating everyone else.
Uproar among Republicans is expected. However, the more objective majority—those likely to swing votes during Election Day—see this as an unfortunate episode of legal warfare, reminiscent of courts in unstable nations.
The True Concerns of America
However, the rest of the American population is left pondering why Democrats seem more fixated on Trump than pressing issues affecting their daily lives. Rising inflation, housing costs, economic fluctuations, burgeoning credit card debt, skyrocketing food prices, border security concerns, safety in their neighborhoods, increasing energy costs, and escalating global conflicts all need to be addressed, but seem to be sidelined by this spectacle.

While President Biden’s team tries to convince us of his fitness for four more years in the world’s most demanding job, their attempts come off as hollow. Their rhetoric of Trump’s malevolence falls on deaf ears. Regardless of the trial’s verdict, Biden’s strategy seems clear: he’s turning to fear-mongering instead of tangible policy victories, suggesting that defeating Trump is the only way to save democracy.
The Ineffective Democratic Playbook
It’s worth noting that their strategy hasn’t really changed over the last three elections. The American people have heard of all this before and it contradicts the results they witnessed from the Trump administration. They associate Trump with concerningly abrasive tweets; however, they also credit him with reduced inflation, improved employment rates for minorities and low-income groups, a strong security stance, and significantly enhanced border control.
The American public recalls the highs of Trump’s presidency; anything contrary appears as a stark contrast to the Biden administration’s failings. No amount of manipulation from the administration’s economists can change that perception.
Public Opinion of Trump vs the Established Political Elite
Ever since Trump’s highly publicized political entry in June 2015, Democrats, as well some Republicans, and the Washington D.C. political aristocracy, recognized the potential threat. They were comfortable with him as long he remained confined within the realms of New York, Hollywood, or his golf resorts in Florida. His move to D.C. signified a direct threat to their status quo.

Americans and the Perception of Justice
American citizens affirm a strong belief in justice for all. An unequal application of justice evokes a strong sense of revulsion. A not guilty verdict for Trump would mean Democrats explaining their misguided prosecution. A hung jury exposes the weakness of their case against a leading presidential candidate during an election year. In case of a conviction, would they be able to explain the charges Trump was found guilty of? Regardless of the outcome, Democrats face a losing battle in public opinion.
