A study in Scientific Reports has detailed how a male orangutan in an Indonesian rainforest with a facial injury treated itself using plant-based remedies. The researchers found that the ape used anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and analgesic properties present in a certain plant leaves, creating a paste to treat its wound. The team, from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and Universitas Nasional, noted the primate’s wound healed completely, leaving a barely visible scar. This is the first observed case of a wild male Sumatran orangutan using a known biologically active plant substance for active wound treatment.
