YouTube tech reviewer Jeremy Judkins found himself a subject of a real-life safety test after his finger was jammed during a functionality check of Tesla’s Cybertruck. Judkins, renowned for his Tesla product reviews, was investigating a recent software upgrade aimed at enhancing the safety of the vehicle’s front-facing compartment, or “frunk.” During the testing process, his finger was abruptly slammed by the frunk, causing a disturbing dent on his digit, a mishap he shared with his YouTube follower base of over 170,000.
The safety upgrade was released by Tesla following an array of viral online videos showing the truck’s hatch crushing items like vegetables. Judkins put the update to the test using bananas, cucumbers, and carrots to challenge the frunk’s sensor, which managed to detect these items successfully, only slicing off the tip of a carrot. His testing moved on from veggies to his finger, leading to a rather painful result when the door of the frunk malfunctions and clamped down on his finger.
The Cybertruck has come under scrutiny lately after the automaker had to recall nearly 4,000 units last month due to a risky gas pedal defect. This followed a separate issue which required a fix when the pedal got stuck and led to unintentional acceleration, heightening the risk of crashing.
Judkins was informed by Wes Morrill, a lead engineer for Cybertruck, that the frunk’s door forcefully shuts down on the third attempt due to a designed algorithm, presuming the hurdle to be a shopping bag or similar inanimate obstruction. Despite his ordeal, Judkins managed to free his digit and avoid considerable injury.
